Research Associate, Biology


Selecta Biosciences is seeking a talented and dedicated individual to join our fast paced company! The Research Associate, Biology is a research scientist supporting Selecta's biology group in the development of preclinical and clinical products based on the company's novel and proprietary nanoparticle technology. 

The Research Associate's primary role is to conduct in vivo and in vitro studies to advance Selecta's drug discovery programs. S/he will participate in designing and executing experiments aimed at evaluating the efficacy of Selecta's nanoparticles in relevant non-infectious disease models and understanding the mechanism of action of drug candidates.  The position is approximately 80% lab and 20% non-lab work.

 Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the scheduling and designing of experiments
  • Participate in executing animal experiments including injections and processing tissue and serum samples
  • Process and analyze healthy human blood samples
  • Perform assay development including, but not limited to cell-based and enzymatic assays to determine efficacy of Selecta's technology and investigate its potential applications
  • Convert raw data from FACS or other experimental output readouts into Excel
  • Participate and present, as needed, in weekly scientific meetings
  • Order inventory supplies specific to reagents required in biology experiments
  • Record data in research notebooks and report results according to SOPs and company procedures
  • Maintain clean, neat, sanitary, organized and safe workspace / laboratory
  • Perform additional job related duties as required

 The Research Associate is expected to work under close supervision in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, build strong interactions with internal scientists, be an active participant on multidisciplinary project teams, contribute to experimental data analysis, and effectively communicate their work through presentations and study reports.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • BA/BS degree in biology, biotechnology, life sciences or relevant science major. Master's preferred.
  • 2+ years of laboratory work in an industry or academic lab.  

Additional requirements include:

  • A background in immunology is preferred.
  • Experience in immunophenotyping of mouse and human lymphocyte responses, biomarker identification and development, and in vivo disease models are highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with ELISA's with a variety of detection modes, including data analysis and assay development is required.
  • Working knowledge of tissue culture-based immunological and biochemical assays
  • Knowledge of multiparameter flow cytometry is a plus
  • Must be comfortable performing in vivo studies and be willing to inject mice and perform necropsies
  • Must be comfortable working with healthy human blood samples and setting up in-vitro assays to measure their activity
  • Must be well organized and team oriented, with demonstrated ability to efficiently and productively advance multiple projects in parallel
  • Excellent critical thinking and verbal and written communication skills are essential
  • Must be hands on in the lab and be able to work effectively in a team environment

 Work Environment

This position works in an environment in which safety, environmental and health concerns may demand constant attention. Strict adherence to Company policies, rules, and regulations in these as is required.

 While performing the duties of this job, the employee handles hazardous chemicals in the laboratory. The employee will be required to wear all appropriate safety equipment including but not limited to eye protection, gloves, shoes, and lab coat. 

 Position may require long periods of standing.

 The Company has active programs on developing novel immunotherapies for various food and environmental allergies.  An employee may be required to work with and/or be exposed to allergens in the laboratory.
